THAMES CRUISE GUIDE

How to choose a Thames river cruise in London

A Thames boat can be a narrated sightseeing trip, scheduled River Bus, dining experience or high-speed ride. Choose the format and pier according to what you want to see and where you want to finish.

01

Sightseeing cruise or River Bus?

A sightseeing cruise is built around views and commentary. It may offer one-way, return or all-day tickets between major visitor piers.

Uber Boat by Thames Clippers is London’s scheduled River Bus. It serves a wider pier network and is useful for travelling from one district to another, but it should not be assumed to provide a narrated tour.

Choose sightseeing for interpretation and a slower visitor experience. Choose the River Bus when the boat is also part of the transport plan.

02

Pick the pier by the next activity

Westminster and London Eye piers fit a central sightseeing day. Tower Pier works well around the Tower of London and Tower Bridge. Greenwich Pier allows a linear itinerary that ends among the maritime museums and market rather than returning immediately to central London.

Check the exact operator and pier. Several services use nearby but different boarding points.

03

One-way can be more useful than a return

A one-way journey from Westminster or Tower to Greenwich can replace an Underground journey and avoid retracing the route. A circular or return cruise suits travellers who need to finish where they started.

Before booking a return, ask whether the second river journey adds value or simply consumes time that could be used in the destination district.

04

Dining and themed cruises are fixed events

Lunch, afternoon-tea, dinner and entertainment cruises operate more like timed events than public transport. Check the menu, dietary process, live entertainment, dress expectations, boarding deadline and final pier.

Some routes depend on tide or operational conditions. Treat any named farthest point as a planned route, not an unconditional guarantee.

05

Speedboat products need extra checks

High-speed rides prioritise the experience rather than calm sightseeing. Confirm minimum age or height, health restrictions, weather protection, secure storage and whether the route includes a slower commentary section.

A speedboat should not be treated as an interchangeable substitute for a standard sightseeing cruise.

06

Ticket systems are not interchangeable

TfL confirms that Oyster and contactless pay as you go can be used on Uber Boat by Thames Clippers. That does not mean those payment methods are accepted as a fare on every sightseeing operator.

For the River Bus, check zones and remember to follow the correct touch-in and touch-out process. For sightseeing cruises, read the operator’s ticket and boarding conditions.

07

Accessibility depends on the pier as well as the boat

Thames Clippers states that its boats are wheelchair accessible, while some piers have limitations or temporary step-free disruptions. Sightseeing operators may impose different conditions, including restrictions on powered wheelchairs.

Confirm the precise piers, vessel and mobility device before purchase. General statements about an operator’s fleet are not enough.

COMMON QUESTIONS

Thames river cruise guide FAQ

Is the Thames River Bus the same as a sightseeing cruise?

No. It is scheduled transport with scenic views. A sightseeing cruise is more likely to include visitor-focused commentary.

Which pier should I choose?

Choose the pier closest to the activity before or after the boat. Westminster, Tower and Greenwich support different itinerary shapes.

Can I use Oyster or contactless?

Yes on Uber Boat by Thames Clippers under its current fare rules. Do not assume the same applies to independent sightseeing cruises.

Is a one-way cruise worthwhile?

Yes, particularly when it creates a linear itinerary such as central London to Greenwich.

Do Thames boats operate in bad weather?

Many have indoor saloons and operate in ordinary weather, but tide, visibility and operational restrictions can change or cancel a service.

Are the boats wheelchair accessible?

Accessibility varies by operator and pier. Confirm the exact journey and mobility device before paying.
