ROUTE DETAILS

Plan the route before travel day

Start with the address, then verify terminal details, ticket rules and live operating information with the official sources below.

A label such as “central London” is not precise enough to choose a transfer. Paddington, Victoria, Liverpool Street, St Pancras, Bank and Stratford serve different parts of a large city. Start with your accommodation address, identify its nearest practical station, and only then compare the airport routes.

LHR / LGW / STN / LTN / LCY

Compare the airports by where you are staying

Heathrow Airport (LHR)

Heathrow offers three useful rail patterns. Heathrow Express is built around Paddington. The Elizabeth line serves several central stations and can reduce the need to change for parts of the West End, City and east London. The Piccadilly line reaches a different chain of central stops. Compare the whole route to your accommodation, not only the time to the first London station.

Gatwick Airport (LGW)

The rail station is at the South Terminal, with a free terminal shuttle connection from the North Terminal. Southern serves Victoria, while Thameslink reaches stations including London Bridge, Blackfriars, Farringdon and St Pancras. Gatwick Express is another Victoria option. Your useful train is the one that avoids a cross-city transfer after you arrive.

Stansted Airport (STN)

Stansted Express links the airport with Tottenham Hale and Liverpool Street. Tottenham Hale can suit a Victoria line connection; Liverpool Street can suit the City, east London and several Underground or Elizabeth line connections. Coaches may serve a stop closer to some accommodations, but road time is traffic-sensitive.

Luton Airport (LTN)

The terminal is linked by Luton DART to Luton Airport Parkway. From the rail station, services continue toward St Pancras, Farringdon, Blackfriars and other stops. Treat the DART as part of the journey when counting changes, walking and luggage handling.

London City Airport (LCY)

London City Airport has its own DLR station. The DLR connects into the wider network through places such as Canning Town, Canary Wharf, Bank and Stratford. This can be especially practical for Docklands and east London, but compare the onward route if you are staying farther west.

Private or door-to-door transfer

A pre-booked car can reduce luggage changes and may be easier for a group, a child seat request or an address far from a direct rail route. Road time can vary sharply with traffic. Confirm the airport, terminal, meeting instructions, passenger capacity and the complete charge before paying.

A better way to compare two routes

Confirm these details before leaving the airport.

  • Enter the exact accommodation address in an official journey planner.
  • Count every rail change, terminal shuttle and final walk.
  • Check whether lifts or step-free routes are available for the journey you plan.
  • Compare the group total, not just a one-person fare.
  • Check the live timetable and disruption notices shortly before travel.
  • For a late arrival, confirm that the final service still connects with your flight and realistic airport processing time.
