CRUISE PLANNING GUIDE
Cruise booking checklist: see the full trip before you pay
The fare is only one part of a cruise. Compare the cabin, taxes, gratuities, onboard extras, port transfers, documents and cancellation terms before choosing a sailing.

START WITH THE COMPLETE JOURNEY
Make sure the sailing fits the trip you can take
A useful comparison includes the trip to the departure port, the exact cabin, costs on board and the journey home. Confirm the embarkation terminal before treating one sailing as better value.
Departure and arrival ports
Confirm the exact port and terminal, not only the destination name. A city can have more than one passenger facility.
Port times
Record embarkation instructions, last boarding and scheduled return. Ship arrival is not the time you will be clear of the terminal.
Every port of call
Check the route, sea days, time in port and whether a stop uses tenders. Decide which ports matter most.
Getting there and home
Match flights or trains to operator instructions and a disruption margin you can accept.
READ THE FARE
Separate included items from optional spending
Cruise lines and fare types package services differently. Use the final summary for the sailing you select.
| Item | Questions to answer before payment |
|---|---|
| Cabin | Category, deck, location, view and occupancy |
| Dining | Included venues and meals, plus specialty charges |
| Drinks | What is included, limited or sold as a package |
| Gratuities | Included, prepaid, added daily or handled another way |
| Taxes and port fees | Mandatory charges included in the displayed total |
| Internet | Device, data and time limits or separate purchase |
| Excursions | Included, optional or supplied by another operator |
| Transfers | Airport, station, hotel and terminal transport |
| Insurance | Medical, cancellation and evacuation cover for this trip |
Do not assume an item is included because it appeared in a general description. The selected fare and final booking summary control what you are buying.
CABIN CHECK
The same ship can offer very different stays
Category and location
Check the confirmed deck and position, walking distance, nearby lifts, public areas and any stated obstruction or noise risk.
Occupancy and beds
Confirm the maximum occupancy and actual bed arrangement. A sofa bed, pull-down berth or split bed may matter.
View and outdoor space
Distinguish inside, window, obstructed view and balcony cabins. Read the category details rather than relying on a representative image.
Accessibility
Request an appropriate cabin and assistance early, then obtain confirmation of layout, equipment rules and accessible transfers.
COMPLETE CRUISE COST
See the full cost before you choose a sailing
The cruise fare is only the starting point. Review these four cost groups in one currency so you can compare the total trip price for all travelers.
Cruise fare and required charges
Check the fare for all travelers, then confirm port taxes, mandatory fees and any gratuities or service charges not already included.
Travel, transfers and hotel nights
Include flights or trains, airport and port transfers, parking, luggage storage, local transport and any stay before or after the cruise.
Onboard and in-port spending
Review drinks, specialty dining, Wi-Fi, shore excursions and the other extras you are likely to buy. Keep optional spending separate from required charges.
Insurance, documents and payment costs
Allow for travel insurance, passport or visa costs and any card or currency-conversion fees that apply to the booking.
Compare the complete trip, not the headline fare. Use the provider's itemized total to compare sailings like for like. A lower cruise fare may not mean a lower-cost trip.
Plan for the terminal, not only the city
Start with the address named by the operator.
Estimate the journey from the airport or station using the time of day, luggage, party size and transport that will actually be available. Keep a backup route.
For the return, allow for disembarkation, border or customs steps where applicable, luggage collection and travel from the port. No single buffer fits every itinerary.
Check requirements for every stop
Entry and transit rules depend on nationality and the whole itinerary.
A visa or entry permission can be required even when a passenger does not plan to leave the ship. Check official government sources and operator documentation rules well before departure.
Confirm names, passport validity, child documents, online check-in deadlines and any health-document rule for every traveler.
Match insurance to the cruise
Ordinary cover may not fit the itinerary.
Review medical treatment, evacuation or repatriation, cancellation, missed departure and planned activities. Declare medical conditions as required by the policy.
Know the exit terms
Read cancellation, name-change and missed-departure rules.
Record each refund or fee deadline and the time zone used. Check how taxes, extras, insurance and related flights are treated.
Do not assume you can join at a later port after a missed embarkation. Save the emergency contact route before travel.

Common cruise questions
What is usually included?
Inclusions vary by line, ship, sailing and fare. Use the final summary for the selected cabin.
Are port fees and gratuities included?
They may be included, added before payment or charged separately. Check the itemized total and service-charge policy.
How early should I reach the departure city?
There is no universal answer. Consider route reliability, terminal distance, documents, luggage and the last boarding time.
Can I board at the next port?
Do not assume so. Immigration, port operations and operator terms may prevent it.
