EUROPE RAIL PASS GUIDE

Interrail Pass guide: the former Eurail name explained

Since 10 September 2026, new customers worldwide receive an Interrail Pass. Eurail is now a legacy name for passes already issued to residents outside Europe. The network works much as before, but the pass still does not make every train free or every route cheaper.

START WITH THE NEW NAME

One Interrail brand, with residence rules that still matter

The former Eurail and Interrail products now sit under one global Interrail brand. Residence no longer chooses the product name, but it still needs to be entered correctly because it affects proof requirements and travel inside a pass holder's country of residence.

Buying a new pass

Choose Interrail. All customers receive an Interrail Pass after the global rebrand, including travelers who live in Israel or another country outside Europe.

You already hold a Eurail Pass

Keep using it. A mobile or paper pass already issued with the Eurail name remains valid. Existing reservations and the planned trip are not changed by the new branding.

Your passport and residence differ

Use the country where you actually live on the first day of validity. Bring government-issued proof of that residence. If acceptable proof is unavailable, the country on the passport or equivalent document may have to be used.

Which ticket is the sensible starting point?

There is no universal break-even route. Use the shape of the trip to narrow the choice, then compare the actual totals for your dates.

PASS TYPES

Choose the geography, then the travel rhythm

A travel day is a local calendar day, from 00:00 to 23:59. You can take multiple covered trains on that day, but reservations and capacity rules still apply.

Global Pass

Covers participating services across the 33-country pass network. It suits a multi-country route or a plan that may change. The standard Flexi choices currently range from 4, 5 or 7 travel days in one month to 10 or 15 travel days in two months.

One Country Pass

Covers participating services within the named country or region. Most versions offer a choice of travel days within one month. The journey to the country and the journey away from it are generally separate purchases.

Flexi Pass

Use a fixed number of travel days inside a longer validity period. This is often the cleaner fit when you stay two or three nights in each place and move only on selected dates.

Continuous Pass

Every day in the validity period is available for travel. Current Global options include 15 days, 22 days, one month, two months and three months. It makes more sense when rail travel is frequent rather than occasional.

01

Count travel days, not train journeys

Several trains on the same date normally use one Flexi travel day.

Write the route as a dated list and circle every calendar day on which you will board a covered service. A day with Amsterdam to Brussels and Brussels to Paris still counts as one travel day, even though it contains two trains. A short, inexpensive local trip can also consume a whole day, so it may be better to buy that ticket separately.

A direct overnight train normally uses the departure day only, provided there is no change after midnight and the arrival date is still inside the pass validity period. Boarding another train after the overnight service arrives uses a new travel day.

02

Add reservations before comparing prices

The pass is the base ticket, not always the complete boarding document.

Most high-speed trains and all night trains require a separate reservation or sleeping-place booking. Eurostar, TGV, AVE, Freccia and other popular services can also limit the seats offered to passholders. A normal ticket may still be on sale after the passholder allocation has gone.

This matters on routes such as London to Paris and Paris to Barcelona. On a route such as Paris to Amsterdam, check the exact train and booking method rather than assuming every departure follows the same rule.

03

Check the operator, not only the country

A country on the map does not mean every train, bus or ferry is included.

The pass covers participating national railways, selected private operators and certain ferries or buses. City metros, trams, airport expresses and private railways can be excluded even when another service in the same city is covered. Use the Rail Planner network filter, then confirm any exception with the operating company.

If part of a journey falls outside the network, buy a valid ticket for that section. Adding an uncovered train manually in the app does not make it covered.

04

Compare the complete cost and the flexibility

A cheap pass can become an expensive plan when required extras are ignored.

Use one total for the pass: purchase price, mandatory reservations, booking or delivery fees, sleeper upgrades, supplements and uncovered local legs. Compare it with the current total for individual tickets on the trains you would actually take.

Then price the non-cash difference. A pass may be worth more to someone who wants to decide late or change cities, while an early, fixed itinerary can favor restricted point-to-point fares. Do not count flexibility twice if the key trains still require scarce reservations.

Rules that can affect the real value

These details are easy to miss because they sit outside the headline pass price.

Travel in your home country

An Interrail Global Pass normally permits one outbound and one inbound journey in a pass-network country of residence. They use ordinary travel days and are not two extra days. An Israeli resident does not gain an Israel rail benefit merely because the product is now called Interrail.

Age and family pricing

At the time of checking, travelers aged 12 to 27 receive a 25% Youth discount and travelers aged 60 or over receive a 10% Senior discount. Up to two children aged 4 to 11 can receive a free Child Pass with an eligible passholder aged 18 or over.

Children still need booking space

A free Child Pass does not make a required seat, couchette or bed free. Children under 4 do not normally need a pass unless they need their own reserved seat or bed.

First and second class

A first-class pass can be used in second class, but a second-class pass cannot be used in first class. There is no refund simply because the chosen service has no first-class accommodation.

Activation and refunds

A pass can generally be activated within 11 months of purchase, but a promotion may set another window. Refunds go through the original seller. Promotional passes can have stricter or non-refundable terms.

Connections are not automatically protected

A pass with separate mandatory reservations does not always create one through-ticket for the whole route. Leave a sensible interchange and check the carrier's disruption rules before replacing a missed train yourself.

MOBILE PASS

The app is part of the ticket

Add the pass to Rail Planner, connect it to a trip and activate it before travel. With a Flexi Pass, activate the relevant travel day and add every journey leg before boarding. The journey must appear on that day's ticket for inspection.

An internet connection is required when activating the pass, activating a travel day and adding a journey. Under the current conditions, the app must also be opened while online at least once every 24 hours so the pass remains authenticated. A screenshot is not accepted. Carry the original identification document linked to the pass and keep the phone charged and readable throughout the journey.

Do not activate the validity period simply to explore the app. A mobile pass can be deactivated only before that period begins, and starting the validity period affects refund eligibility.

CHECK THE EXACT PRODUCT

Review the current rail pass details before paying

The link opens a current Trip.com rail-pass listing. A reseller may still show the former Eurail name while its catalog catches up with the Interrail rebrand. Confirm the current product name, country of residence, route, class, passenger ages and required number of travel days. Check the activation window, refund terms and any separate seat reservations on the final page.

Pass buying checklist

A short route audit is more useful than choosing by the largest advertised country count.

  • Select the current Interrail Pass, enter your actual country of residence, and prepare acceptable proof.
  • List every travel date, country, operator and border crossing in the planned route.
  • Count travel days and test whether a short local journey is cheaper as a separate ticket.
  • Add mandatory reservations, sleeping accommodation, supplements and booking fees.
  • Check passholder availability on the limited trains before locking in non-refundable plans.
  • Compare the full pass total with current point-to-point tickets for the same departures.
  • Read the seller's activation, cancellation, exchange and refund terms before payment.
  • Before boarding, update the app, add each journey, carry the linked ID and charge the phone.

COMMON QUESTIONS

Interrail Pass and former Eurail FAQ

These answers reflect the September 2026 global rebrand. Prices, reservations and participating services should still be checked for the travel date.

Do Israeli travelers need Eurail or Interrail?

For a new purchase after 9 September 2026, an Israeli traveler receives an Interrail Pass. Eurail is the former name for non-European customers and remains valid on passes issued before the change.

What if I have a European passport but live in Israel?

The new product name is Interrail either way, but you should enter your actual country of residence and carry acceptable proof if it differs from the country on your passport. Residence can still affect how the pass rules apply.

Does a Global Pass cover every train in Europe?

No. It covers services in the participating pass network. Some private trains, city transport, airport services, buses and ferries are excluded or only discounted.

Are seat reservations included?

Not with the standard pass. Most high-speed trains and all night trains require a separate reservation or accommodation booking. Some services also limit passholder inventory.

What counts as one travel day?

It is one local calendar day from 00:00 to 23:59. Multiple covered trains can be taken during that day, subject to reservation and capacity rules.

Does a night train use two travel days?

A direct overnight train normally uses the departure day only when there is no train change after midnight and the arrival falls within the pass validity period. A later connection after arrival uses another day.

Does a One Country Pass include travel to that country?

Generally no. It covers participating travel within the named country or region, so the inbound and outbound international journeys normally need separate coverage.

Can an unused pass be refunded?

Standard unused or unactivated passes may qualify under the applicable refund rules, but the request goes to the original seller and a cancellation deduction can apply. Promotional conditions may override the standard policy.

How this guide was checked

We used the current Interrail rebrand FAQ and Pass Conditions, plus the 2026 pass guides, product pages, network information and reservation guidance. Eurail is treated as a former product name, not the current choice for non-European residents.
