LISBON PLANNING GUIDE
Lisbon attractions that fit the shape of your stay
Plan for hills, waterfront districts and a full travel day to Sintra. A castle visit, Belém monuments, the Oceanário and Pena Palace solve different kinds of days.

START WITH THE EXPERIENCE
Choose a city day or a day trip first
A central ticket and a tightly timed Sintra entry should not compete for the same day. Decide on the geography before the product.
Castelo de São Jorge
Use the hilltop castle as the high point of an Alfama route.
Belém monuments
Jerónimos Monastery and Belém Tower are separate visits with separate access.
Oceanário
Give Parque das Nações its own weather-resistant block.
Pena Palace
Protect the Palace time slot and the travel inside Sintra.
Viewpoints and streets
A flexible hill and neighborhood route can be more useful than another ticket.
Guided day trip
Check transport, named admissions, meeting point and the actual return plan.
Compare the shape of each visit
Hills, district changes and travel to Sintra matter as much as the headline attraction.
| Experience | Area | Useful when | Check before paying |
|---|---|---|---|
| Castelo de São Jorge | Alfama hill | Views and city history are the priority | Uphill route, surfaces, heat and current accessibility |
| Jerónimos Monastery | Belém | Architecture and maritime-era history anchor the day | Exact entry, current opening, security and separate nearby sites |
| Belém Tower | Belém waterfront | The tower interior matters, not only the exterior | Current access, capacity, stairs and a separate ticket |
| Oceanário de Lisboa | Parque das Nações | You want a weather-resistant or family-focused visit | Chosen time, ticket format and temporary exhibitions |
| Pena Palace | Sintra | The palace and park justify most of a day | Palace slot, park-to-palace travel, road restrictions and return |
Use the castle in an Alfama route
The practical issue is the climb, paving and heat.
Approach Castelo de São Jorge as the high point of the day, then continue downhill through Alfama. Check the official ticket channel and current accessibility.
Avoid another fixed booking across town immediately after the castle.
Treat Belém as a district
The monastery and tower are not one combined entrance.
Build time for Jerónimos, the waterfront and the tower exterior even if an interior slot is unavailable. Recheck current access close to travel because capacity or conservation work can change.
Do not assume a city card or package covers both without checking its current terms.
Keep the Oceanário with Oriente
Parque das Nações is away from Alfama and Belém.
Check the chosen ticket format, child categories, accessibility and any combined experience. Pair the visit with the modern waterfront rather than squeezing it between historic-center bookings.
The station and broad paths can make this a practical family or bad-weather day.
Protect the Pena Palace slot
The Palace time is not arrival at the outer park gate.
Include travel from Lisbon and movement from the park entrance to the Palace. Private-car access is restricted, so check the current local transport plan.
Any tour should name pickup, return, Palace admission, guide language and other Sintra monuments included.

A booking checklist that protects the day
Confirm the details that affect entry, timing and the rest of the route.
- Confirm the exact monument and whether nearby sites need separate tickets.
- Map hills, paving, stairs and the correct visitor entrance.
- For Sintra, check pickup, transport, Palace slot and park-to-palace travel time.
- Review current access or conservation notices close to the visit date.
- Check ID, child, accessibility, late-arrival and cancellation conditions.
- Keep confirmations offline and leave enough time for the return to Lisbon.
PLAN YOUR STAY
Choose a Lisbon base that works with the hills
Baixa and Chiado keep central sights and transport close, while Parque das Nações suits Oriente and the Oceanário. Check access, room details and the complete total for your dates.
