THE SHORT ANSWER
Choose the station and train type together
A slightly later ride from Shinagawa can be easier than crossing Tokyo to reach Tokyo Station. Use the ticket for the exact station and service.
Departure
Use Tokyo Station or Shinagawa Station, depending on which is easier to reach and what the ticket states.
Arrival
The Shinkansen arrives at Kyoto Station, with local rail, subway, bus and taxi connections.
Journey pattern
The fastest Nozomi trips are about 2 hours 10 minutes. Hikari and Kodama make more stops.
Pick the train type that fits the ticket
All three services use the Tokaido Shinkansen, but journey time and Japan Rail Pass treatment differ.
| Check | What to compare | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| Nozomi | Fewest stops and usually fastest | Check ticket or pass eligibility for the selected date |
| Hikari | More stops than Nozomi | Often the practical nationwide JR Pass choice |
| Kodama | Stops most often | Useful only when the longer journey fits |
| Seat | Reserved or non-reserved where offered | Flexibility and certainty are not the same |
| Boarding | QR, registered IC card or paper ticket | Every traveler needs the correct gate method |
Start where the ticket says
Tokyo and Shinagawa are both valid departure stations.
Compare the complete journey from the accommodation and allow time to follow signs for the Tokaido Shinkansen gate and platform. Do not confuse ordinary JR gates with Shinkansen entry or transfer gates.
Save the local line, bus stop or exit needed after arrival at the large Kyoto Station complex.
Choose the boarding method before arrival
The booking can use a QR code, registered IC card or collected paper ticket.
Follow the instructions attached to the Trip.com booking. If using an IC card, register the correct card to the correct traveler before reaching the gate.
Keep seat details after passing the gate and make sure every member of a group has a valid boarding method.
Measure oversized baggage
Large bags can require a particular seat reservation.
On the Tokaido Shinkansen, baggage over 160 cm and up to 250 cm in combined external dimensions requires a seat with an oversized baggage area or compartment. Items over 250 cm cannot be brought onboard.
Measure wheels and handles and reserve the space with the seat. There is no separate checked-bag car.
Match the pass to the train type
A nationwide Japan Rail Pass does not treat every service identically.
Hikari and Kodama are the standard covered choices. Nozomi requires the separate eligible supplement for a passholder. Peak-period seat rules can also change.
Carry the pass and any separate reservation or supplement required. A pass does not remove the oversized-baggage reservation rule.
