What a travel VPN actually changes
A virtual private network creates an encrypted connection between your device and a VPN server. Websites normally see the server's public IP address instead of the public IP address assigned to your device. The hotel, airport or cafe network has less visibility into the traffic passing through that encrypted connection.
That does not eliminate trust. It moves part of it from the local network and internet provider to the VPN company. The provider may be able to observe connection information, and it operates under the laws of the jurisdictions relevant to its business. Read the privacy policy, retention language and transparency information before treating any provider as trustworthy.
HTTPS already encrypts the content exchanged with most modern websites. The FTC therefore says using public Wi-Fi is usually safe when sites use encryption. A VPN can still add a layer between you and an unfamiliar local network, particularly when you do not know who operates it, but it should be part of a broader security routine.
Our take
A VPN is most useful when you understand the specific risk it addresses. For many travelers, updated devices, strong unique passwords, multi-factor authentication and careful handling of unfamiliar links matter more than choosing between two reputable VPN apps.
What a VPN can and cannot do
It can help with
A properly configured VPN can reduce what an untrusted local network sees, mask your usual public IP address from websites, and protect traffic between your device and the VPN server. It can also provide a secure route to an employer's internal systems when used through an approved corporate VPN.
It cannot solve
A VPN does not stop phishing, unsafe downloads, password reuse or a scam website. HTTPS protects the connection, but even a fraudulent site can use HTTPS. A VPN also does not hide account logins, GPS data, cookies, tracking pixels or browser fingerprinting, so it does not make you anonymous.
It cannot guarantee access
Websites and streaming services may block VPN traffic or apply regional and account restrictions. Server availability also changes. Do not buy a subscription on the assumption that a specific website, service or library will always work from every destination.
It cannot guarantee speed
Performance depends on the local network, congestion, distance to the server, protocol, device and destination service. A nearby server may reduce added latency, but no provider can guarantee a particular speed on every hotel, airport or mobile connection.
How to compare VPN services for a trip
1. Privacy and accountability
Check what data the provider says it collects, how long it retains it and when it may disclose it. Look for dated, independently produced audit reports and read their scope. An audit can add evidence, but it is not a permanent guarantee about every system or future practice.
2. Your actual devices
List every phone, tablet and laptop you intend to protect. Confirm operating-system support, simultaneous connection limits and whether you need a full device app or only a browser extension. A browser extension normally does not cover traffic from other apps.
3. Travel-friendly controls
Look for automatic connection on unfamiliar Wi-Fi, a kill switch and clear connection status. Test how the app handles captive portals, the hotel or airport sign-in pages shown before internet access begins. Some networks require portal authentication before the VPN can connect.
4. Provider and server fit
Check whether the provider maintains supported connection options near your destinations and whether its app receives regular updates. More locations do not automatically mean better performance. The useful question is whether the available routes work reliably for your devices and itinerary.
5. The complete subscription terms
Compare the total prepaid amount, renewal price, taxes, billing period, auto-renewal setting, cancellation process and refund conditions. A low monthly equivalent may require a long upfront commitment. Include the real purchase total in your trip cost.
6. Work and support requirements
If you are traveling for work, follow your employer's security policy. A personal VPN is not a substitute for an approved corporate connection. Also check whether support is available during your travel hours and how you can reach it if the app fails abroad.
Two partner options to evaluate
Affiliate disclosure: RentSivo may earn a commission from qualifying purchases made through the partner links below. NordVPN and Surfshark are commercial partners. That relationship does not change the limitations or selection criteria explained in this guide.
NordVPN
NordVPN provides apps for Windows, macOS, Linux, Android and iOS, plus several browsers and TV platforms. Its current product information lists support for up to 10 simultaneous devices. It may fit a traveler whose device count falls within that allowance and who prefers its available apps and controls.
Review the current plan, renewal terms, supported operating-system versions, privacy documents and audit scope before purchasing. Compatibility and features can differ by platform.

Surfshark
Surfshark provides apps for major desktop, mobile, browser and TV platforms. Its current product information advertises no limit on simultaneous connections. That may be relevant to a traveler with many personal devices or a household sharing one subscription, subject to the provider's current account-use terms.
Review the full billing commitment, renewal terms, platform-specific features, privacy documents and audit scope. An unlimited device policy does not by itself establish better privacy, speed or reliability.

No universal winner
Choose between these services only after checking your device count, destination, subscription term and preferred controls. RentSivo does not promise that either option will be fastest, unblock a particular service or make online activity anonymous.
Set up safer travel access before departure
- Install the VPN only from the provider's official site or an official app store.
- Update the operating system, browser, apps and VPN client before leaving.
- Turn on automatic updates where practical.
- Enable multi-factor authentication on email, banking, travel and password-manager accounts.
- Store recovery codes somewhere secure and separate from the device.
- Test the VPN, automatic connection and kill switch on every device you will carry.
- Disable automatic joining of unfamiliar Wi-Fi networks.
- Confirm the correct network name and sign-in process with hotel or airport staff.
- Prefer your personal mobile hotspot when the public network's identity is uncertain.
- Keep checking for HTTPS and suspicious domain names even while the VPN is active.
- Avoid signing into sensitive accounts on shared hotel or business-center computers.
- Save the provider's support and cancellation instructions before the trip.
If a captive portal prevents the VPN from connecting, complete only the minimum network sign-in step, then reconnect the VPN before other activity. If the network still behaves unexpectedly, switch to mobile data or postpone sensitive tasks.
Check local law at every destination
VPN rules differ between countries and can change. Some jurisdictions restrict VPN use, require approved services or regulate online activity that a traveler may assume is ordinary elsewhere. Check official destination travel advice and current local rules before installing or using a VPN. A subscription does not create a legal right to bypass restrictions, copyright rules or a website's terms.
The same caution applies to devices and data. Border, employer and local-authority requirements may affect what you can carry, access or disclose. Seek qualified advice when the trip involves sensitive professional information or a destination with significant technology restrictions.
